To renew your vehicle tags in California, you can do it online, in person, or by mail. Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
- Your license plate number
- The last 5 digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN) or hull identification number (HIN) for a vessel/boat
- A renewal notice confirming your current address. If you moved, update your address at least 3 days before you begin your renewal application
- Your payment information. All credit/debit card transactions include an additional 1.95% payment processing fee. If paying directly from your bank account, there are no additional fees.
If you are renewing in person, you will need your annual registration renewal notice or your plate number and VIN number or old registration. If you are renewing a commercial vehicle or have a more complex transaction, you may need additional documents such as a smog inspection certification.
Note that if the DMV does not have your vehicle insurance information on file, they will require you to mail your insurance card or stop by the DMV office to drop off your insurance card.
