Kookaburras primarily eat a variety of vertebrates and invertebrates. Their diet includes small snakes, lizards, frogs, mice, rats, birds and their nestlings, insects such as beetles, ants, earthworms, grasshoppers, moths, flies, spiders, centipedes, caterpillars, and even fish and crustaceans like crabs and crayfish. They catch prey mostly by perching and watching before swooping down to capture it, and they often kill larger prey by bashing them on rocks or branches before eating. Kookaburras are carnivorous and do not typically eat plant material.
In short, they eat mostly meat including reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, birds, and a wide range of insects and other arthropods.
