A Scrum Master is a professional who leads a team using Agile project management through the course of a project, teams, and team members. The Scrum Master serves to facilitate Scrum to the larger team by ensuring the Scrum framework is followed. They are responsible for managing the exchange of information between team members, facilitating all the communication and collaboration between leadership and team communication between teams, and coaching and mentoring team members in Agile and Scrum principles, helping them continually improve. Scrum Masters utilize their unique skillset to do a lot of critical work that helps the Scrum Team. They help the Scrum Team by coaching the team members in self-management and cross-functionality, focusing on creating high-value Increments that meet the Definition of Done, influencing the removal of impediments to the Scrum Team’s progress, and ensuring that all Scrum events take place and are positive, productive, and kept within the timebox. They also help the Product Owner by ensuring product backlog items are clearly defined and managed efficiently. While there are no formal education requirements for Scrum Master positions, having a technical background can be beneficial, especially when working with development teams.
