The Michigan shooter has been identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year- old resident of Burton, Michigan. He was a veteran of the Iraq War, having served in the U.S. Marines from 2004 to 2008 with deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sanford drove a vehicle into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, then opened fire on the congregants with an assault rifle during a Sunday service. At least four people were killed, eight others wounded, and the church was deliberately set on fire by Sanford before he was killed in a shootout with responding police. Investigations are ongoing, with the FBI leading the probe, and the authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Sanford was also a family man with a young son who had serious health issues, and he had taken leave from his job to care for his child. This tragic event has deeply affected the local community and officials are continuing to work the case.
