what do you do with amaryllis bulbs after they bloom

After an amaryllis bulb blooms, it is possible to get it to rebloom next year. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Cut off the flower stalk once the flowers begin to fade, leaving it in place until it turns yellow. The flower stalk can photosynthesize and create energy/food that will be stored for future flower growth.

  2. Leave the leaves of the amaryllis in place, as they are needed to create energy/food so the plant can bloom again.

  3. Place the amaryllis in a bright indoor location (a window with southern exposure is likely the best place) and water regularly. Fertilize monthly with an all-purpose houseplant or indoor plant fertilizer.

  4. For amaryllis to rebloom, they need to be exposed to cool temperatures for a period. This can be done by forcing your plants into dormancy by placing them in a cool (45 to 55°F), dark location. The bulb will need to go through a resting period for approximately eight to twelve weeks before it can be forced to bloom again. During this time, do not water the plants. Once the leaves become yellow, they can be removed.

  5. After the resting period, move the amaryllis to a warm, sunny location where it can continue to prepare for a new season of blooming. Then move it back outdoors again after the last frost.

  6. Repotting amaryllis is only necessary after a few years, as the plant does best if there is very little disturbance to the roots.

By following these steps, it is possible to get an amaryllis bulb to rebloom and enjoy its beautiful flowers again next year.
