To feed a horse in Minecraft, you must have the food item selected in your hot bar and the horse must be hungry. The following are the foods that you can feed a horse in Minecraft:
- Sugar: 1 health point (x 0.5), speeds growth by 30 seconds
- Wheat: 2 health points (x 1), speeds growth by 20 seconds
- Apple: 3 health points (x 1.5), speeds growth by 1 minute
- Golden Carrot: 4 health points (x 2), speeds growth by 1 minute
- Golden Apple: 10 health points (x 5), speeds growth by 4 minutes
- Hay Bale: Best food for horses, restores 20 health points
Feeding invalid food causes the player to mount the horse. Horses can be fed only when feeding would have an effect. For example, if a horse was at full health, it could not be fed anything but breeding items while a baby horse can always be fed items which help it grow. If you want to breed horses, you can feed them golden apples or golden carrots.
