A Taser is a handheld conducted energy device that fires two small dart-like electrodes connected by wires into a target. These darts deliver a high- voltage, low-current electric shock that disrupts the target’s nervous system, causing strong involuntary muscle contractions and neuromuscular incapacitation. This temporarily incapacitates the person, preventing voluntary control of muscles and allowing law enforcement or others to subdue them safely. The Taser can also be used in a contact mode to deliver pain compliance without muscle incapacitation. It is considered a less-lethal weapon, with effects mainly including temporary immobilization and localized pain.
