Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is effective against infections caused by susceptible bacteria, particularly beta- lactamase–negative strains. Common infections treated by amoxicillin include:
- Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis
- Ear infections (acute otitis media)
- Dental infections and abscesses
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Infections of the nose and throat
- Helicobacter pylori infections (used in combination with other drugs to treat stomach ulcers)
- Lyme disease (early cutaneous Lyme borreliosis)
- Salmonella infections
- Prevention of bacterial endocarditis in certain high-risk patients
Amoxicillin is not effective against viral infections such as colds, flu, or COVID-19
. It is important to use amoxicillin only under medical supervision and to complete the full course of treatment to prevent antibiotic resistance and ensure the infection is fully cleared
