In emails, "cc" stands for carbon copy. It is a feature that allows you to send a copy of an email to someone in addition to the primary recipient(s). The recipients in the "cc" field are typically informed about the email but are not the main audience for a reply. Everyone who receives the email can see the addresses of those in both the "to" and "cc" fields. "cc" is often used to:
- Keep stakeholders or additional parties informed.
- Let people follow a conversation without requiring immediate action from them.
- Provide transparency about who has received the message.
The idea comes from the era of carbon paper used to make copies of documents, which is why the term "carbon copy" is used. Nowadays, "cc" is sometimes called a "courtesy copy" to reflect its common usage in digital communication.
