In medicine, DO stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. DOs are physicians who are fully trained and licensed to practice medicine, just like MDs (Doctors of Medicine) . However, DOs take a more holistic approach to medicine, considering both the physical and mental needs of their patients. They use a whole-body, patient-centered approach to medicine and strive to help patients be truly healthy in mind, body, and spirit. DOs also receive training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which is a hands-on treatment method that focuses on the musculoskeletal system. Both DOs and MDs are licensed by state and specialty boards to practice medicine, do surgery, and write prescriptions.
