The Bible has several passages that mention divorce. According to the Bible, marriage is a lifetime commitment, and God hates divorce. The Bible permits divorce only in certain circumstances, such as when a partner has committed adultery. In Matthew 5:32, Jesus says, "But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery". In 1 Corinthians 7:10-11, Paul says that if a wife separates from her husband, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband, and a husband must not divorce his wife. While the Bible does not agree with divorce, it permits it in certain circumstances when remaining married is harmful, such as in cases of abuse or abandonment by an unbelieving partner.
