The executor of a will is responsible for managing and administering the estate of the deceased person according to their wishes as set out in the will. This includes applying for probate (legal authorization to act), identifying and securing the estate's assets, paying debts and taxes, handling funeral arrangements, and distributing the remaining assets to beneficiaries. The executor acts as the legal personal representative of the deceased and must carry out these duties diligently, often under court supervision, until the estate is fully settled. Executors may also need to defend the will if contested and manage any legal or tax issues related to the estate. Their authority and responsibilities begin after the death and through the probate process, and their role ceases once all assets have been properly distributed and obligations met.
