The Farmers' Almanac for winter 2020 predicted a freezing, frigid, and frosty winter for about two-thirds of the United States, especially east of the Rockies to the Appalachians. The coldest temperatures were expected in the northern Plains and Great Lakes, with the Northeast also experiencing colder- than-normal conditions. The Almanac forecasted above-normal precipitation, including snow and a wintry mix of rain and sleet, for the eastern third of the country, Great Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes. A significant cold outbreak was predicted for the final week of January through early February, with potentially memorable snowstorms in the third week of January in the Great Plains and surrounding areas. Only the western third of the country was expected to have near-normal winter temperatures.
