The word "planet" in ancient Greek means "wanderer." It comes from the Greek term πλανήτης (planētēs), derived from the verb πλανάω (planáō), which means "to wander about" or "to stray." The ancient Greeks used this word to describe celestial bodies that appeared to move across the sky differently from the fixed stars, which seemed stationary. These "wandering stars" included Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, as well as the Sun and Moon which were also considered planets by the Greeks at that time.
