Lions are apex predators, meaning they have few natural predators. However, they do have some natural enemies, such as hyenas, cheetahs, and wild dogs, which compete with lions for food and often try to steal their kills. A very young or sickly lion might fall prey to hyenas, and cubs may be attacked and eaten by adult male lions. Other animals that can kill lions include elephants, rhinos, crocodiles, porcupines, and baboons. However, these animals do not typically hunt lions to eat them, but rather as a result of territorial disputes or to protect their young. Humans are also a major threat to lions, as they hunt them for sport or to protect their livestock, and encroach on their habitat.
