Ragnar Lothbrok dies in season 4, episode 15 of Vikings. In the episode, he is tortured by King Aelle and then thrown into a pit of venomous snakes. This was Ragnars plan all along, as he wanted to die by the hand of King Aelle so that his sons could return and exact terrible vengeance against his rivals. His death was one of the most shocking moments of the series, given that Ragnar was the main protagonist up until that point.
