We live in the Milky Way galaxy, which is a large barred spiral galaxy. The Milky Way contains around 100 billion stars and has a diameter of about 100,000 light years. Our solar system is located near the edge of one of the galaxy's spiral arms, called the Orion Arm, roughly 25,000 to 28,000 light years from the galactic center. The Milky Way appears as a milky band of light in the night sky when seen from Earth in a dark area because we are inside it and see its dense star-filled disk from within.
