We are currently in the Cenozoic Era, which is Earth's present geological era spanning the last 66 million years. This era is often called the "Age of Mammals" due to the dominance and diversification of mammals following the extinction event that ended the Mesozoic Era. Within the Cenozoic Era, we are in the Quaternary Period, specifically in the Holocene Epoch. There is ongoing scientific discussion about defining a new epoch called the Anthropocene to mark significant human impact, but it is not yet officially designated.
