What happened
A large Hanukkah celebration, often described as a “Chanukah by the Sea” event, was taking place near the northern end of Bondi Beach on the evening of 14 December 2025 when two gunmen opened fire on the crowd of around 1,000 people. Witnesses reported sustained gunfire that caused panic, with people fleeing across the sand and into nearby streets and parks.

Reports indicate that around 15–16 people were killed, including at least one child and one of the attackers. Roughly 40–42 others were taken to hospitals, with several in critical condition and some being police officers who were injured while responding.

Authorities say the attackers were a 50‑year‑old man and his 24‑year‑old son, both armed with long guns. The older man was shot dead by police at the scene, while the younger man was critically injured and taken into custody under police guard; officials say they are not seeking additional suspects.
