On Tuesday night, October 3, 2023, a shooting occurred at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, during the universitys homecoming week. The shooting happened outside a crowded homecoming event, shortly after the coronation of Mister & Miss Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, as students were heading to a campus ball. Four students and another person were wounded when gunfire erupted on campus. The victims, four men and one woman aged 18 to 22, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Four of the victims are Morgan State University students. The university police officers heard gunshots around 9:25 p.m. local time and responded to find multiple gunshot victims on campus and saw multiple shattered windows. A SWAT team and officers from several agencies responded to search for the suspect at the university while students and teachers were urged to shelter in place and avoid the area. As of early Wednesday morning, no suspect was in custody, and no suspect description was provided by police. The university canceled classes on Wednesday and held an emergency meeting to reassess the remaining scheduled homecoming week activities.
