On October 3, 2023, a shooting occurred on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. At approximately 9:27 p.m., the Morgan State University Police Department (MSUPD) responded to shots fired in the vicinity of Thurgood Marshall Residence Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center. Five individuals, four males, and one female, were transported to area hospitals after suffering non-life-threatening injuries from being shot. Four of the individuals were identified as Morgan students, ranging in age from 18-22 years old. No fatalities were reported.
In response to the incident, all classes scheduled for Wednesday, October 4, 2023, were canceled, and the university held an emergency meeting to reassess the remaining scheduled homecoming week activities. Morgan State University President David K. Wilson issued two communications to the Morgan Community, addressing the previous nights incident and homecoming activities and campus safety, unveiling the Universitys intention to cancel classes for the week and homecoming-related activities.
On October 13, 2023, the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) announced the arrest of one of the alleged shooters in the shooting. BPD arrested a 17-year-old male in Washington, D.C., and issued an attempted murder warrant for another 18-year-old male in connection to the shooting. Neither are Morgan students nor have a connection to this university.
