In 1948, the State of Israel was created, sparking the first Arab-Israeli War. The conflict between Jews and Arabs in Palestine came to a head following the passage, on 29 November 1947, of the United Nations partition resolution that called for the establishment of two states, one Jewish and one Arab. The United Nations resolution sparked conflict between Jewish and Arab groups within Palestine, and fighting began with attacks by irregular bands of Palestinian Arabs attached to local units of the Arab Liberation Army composed of volunteers from Palestine and neighboring Arab countries. On May 14, 1948, Israel declared its independence, and the fighting intensified with other Arab forces joining the Palestinian Arabs in attacking territory in the former Palestinian mandate. Arab armies from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt invaded the former Palestinian mandate, and Saudi Arabia sent a formation that fought under the Egyptian command. The war ended in 1949 with Israels victory, but 750,000 Palestinians were displaced, and the territory was divided into three parts. The remaining 22 percent was divided into what are now the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip.
