The Cry of Balintawak occurred on August 26, 1896, and marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. The event is defined as the turning point when Filipinos finally refused Spanish colonial dominion over the Philippine Islands. The people, as one man, pulled out their cedulas and tore them into pieces, symbolizing the formal declaration of separation from Spanish rule. Balintawak was the first place of refuge of Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, Procopio, Bonifacio, Teodoro Plata, Aguedo del Rosario, and others. The first place where some 500 members of the Katipunan met on August 22, 1896, was the house and yard of Apolonio Samson at Kangkong. However, there is some confusion about the exact location of the Cry, with different sources citing different places such as Pugad Lawin, Bahay Toro, and Caloocan. Ultimately, the Philippine government declared in 1963 that the Cry happened on August 23, 1896, in Pugad Lawin, Quezon City.
