In Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on Sunday, September 28, 2025, a mass shooting occurred at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The suspect, Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, a veteran from Burton, drove his pickup truck into the church building, then exited and started firing shots from an assault rifle. The church was also set on fire, believed to be deliberately ignited by the suspect using an accelerant. Sanford was killed in a gunfire exchange with police officers at the scene. The attack resulted in at least four deaths, including the suspect, and at least eight others injured, with some in critical condition. The FBI has taken over the investigation, labeling the attack as targeted violence. The motive remains unclear, and authorities found improvised explosive devices (IEDs) inside the suspect's vehicle as well as conducting a search of his home with bomb squads involved. Authorities have assured the public there is no further danger, and a large law enforcement presence, including 100 FBI agents, is assisting in the investigation. The incident has drawn statements of sorrow and condemnation from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and President Donald Trump, emphasizing the unacceptable violence in a place of worship.
