In Manchester on October 2, 2025, a terrorist attack occurred outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue. The assailant, identified as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, carried out a vehicle ramming and stabbing attack on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least two Jewish worshippers and serious injuries to three others. The attacker was shot dead by police at the scene. Three other individuals—two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s—were arrested on suspicion of involvement in terrorism- related activities. The attacker was wearing a vest resembling an explosive device, but it was later confirmed to be non-functional. The incident was quickly condemned by UK leaders and international figures and categorized as a terrorist act, with heightened security measures implemented at synagogues across the UK in response.
