At least 21 people, including several children, died after a bus carrying foreign tourists crashed off an elevated overpass near Venice and caught fire. The bus broke through a barrier and plunged almost 15m (50ft) near railway tracks in the district of Mestre, which is connected to Venice by a bridge. The bus had been carrying 39 people and was apparently rented by a local company to pick up tourists from the historic center of Venice to a campsite in the nearby Marghera district. The injured were transferred to five different hospitals in the region, and the death toll could rise as several of those hurt in the crash were in critical condition in the hospital. The cause of the accident is unclear, and official mourning has been declared in Venice in memory of the victims.
