Adam Barton is a character from the British soap opera Emmerdale. He was played by actor Adam Thomas and first appeared on the show in 2009. Adam was the son of James and Moira Barton, although it was always assumed that he was the son of James brother John. He had three half-siblings, Pete, Ross, and Finn Barton, as well as Isaac Dingle and Holly, who died of an overdose in 2016.
Adam left Emmerdale in January 2018 after confessing to the murder of Emma Barton, but he did not end up in prison. He confessed to the police that he had murdered Emma in order to save his mother Moira Dingle from prison. Emma had returned to the Dales in 2015 and was set on getting revenge on Moira for ruining her marriage to James Barton. When Emma found out that Moira had reignited her affair with James, she captured James and held him captive at Wylies Farm by drugging his food with morphine. She died after "jumping" from a viaduct in 2017, but it transpired that Moira had pushed her.
Adam was last seen making an exit in a shipping container to start a new life in France. The actor Adam Thomas left Emmerdale in 2018 after playing Adam Barton for nine years. He released a statement upon his departure stating that he had loved every minute of working on Emmerdale, but felt that it was time to move on and challenge himself with some new roles.
