Barry Seal was assassinated on February 19, 1986, by contract killers hired by the Medellín Cartel. Seal was a former commercial airline pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the cartel. After being convicted of smuggling charges, he became an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration and testified in several major drug trials. Seal was expected to be a key witness in a case against Pablo Escobar and others in the kingpins circle, but Escobars crew caught wind of Seals work with the feds and allegedly offered $500,000 to have Seal killed. Seal was murdered outside a halfway house on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was serving a sentence of six months supervised probation. The orchestrator of Seals killing was sentenced to life in prison, while two others involved in the murder also received life sentences.
