Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36, due to the spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain. In 1977, he was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer that is the most common melanoma found in people of color. Marley had a dark spot under his toenail, which he attributed to a soccer injury and did not realize was a serious condition. If his cancer had been detected early, it could have been treated and possibly cured. However, it spread throughout his body, and he collapsed while jogging in Central Park during his final tour. After seeking treatment in Miami and New York, he flew home to Jamaica, but his condition worsened on the flight, and he was rushed to a hospital in Miami, where he died.
