Charles Sobhraj, the notorious serial killer known as "The Serpent," was released from prison in Nepal in December 2022 after serving nearly 20 years. He was convicted for the murders of two Western tourists in 1975 and suspected of killing more than 20 backpackers across Asia in the 1970s and 1980s. His release was granted due to his advanced age (78 at the time) and health issues, including heart surgery. After his release, he was deported to France, where he currently lives free at around 81 years old. Despite having outstanding murder charges in Thailand, he has not been extradited to face those accusations. He has also indicated plans to sue the Nepalese government for his imprisonment and is reportedly involved in commercial ventures and media projects based on his life story.
