Senator Dianne Feinstein, the longest-serving female Senator in history and the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, passed away at the age of 90. Her death has led to discussions about her successor. California Governor Gavin Newsom has the authority to appoint a temporary replacement for Feinstein, and he has expressed his intention to appoint a Black woman to the seat due to the lack of representation in the Senate. The appointed replacement could also choose to run for the seat in the November 2024 election, or endorse one of the candidates already running. The winner of the election will be seated in January 2025.
