In May 2023, Little St. James, the private island owned by Jeffrey Epstein, was sold to a wealthy investor for less than half of its original asking price with the hope of turning it into a luxury resort. The sale of the islands will be used to fund the resolution of Epstein’s estate, which is the subject of countless outstanding lawsuits from victims of his crimes. During Epsteins ownership, the island acquired local nicknames such as "Island of Sin" and "Pedophile Island". The island featured in Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking trial in December 2022. The island was a nexus in Jeffrey Epstein's depraved abuse and trafficking of young women and underage girls. Epstein bought Little St. James in 1998, roughly 18 years before purchasing its larger neighbor, which measures around 161 acres.
