James Butler, also known as the "Harlem Hammer," was an American professional boxer who competed from 1996 to 2004. He had a successful career, with 20 wins (12 by knockout) and 5 losses. However, he is best known for his infamous bout on November 23, 2001, when he brutally sucker-punched Richard Grant after losing the fight. Butler served four months at Rikers Island for this assault.

In 2004, Butler was arrested for the murder of Sam Kellerman, a sportswriter and the younger brother of HBO boxing commentator Max Kellerman. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and arson in connection with the case. Butler was sentenced to 29 years and four months in prison by Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor.

Before his arrest for Kellermans murder, Butler had been indicted on second-degree assault charges by the New York District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors speculated that Butler was involved in other violent incidents.
