Jane Goodall's son is Hugo Eric Louis van Lawick, nicknamed "Grub." He was born in 1967 in Nairobi, Kenya, to Jane Goodall and her first husband, Baron Hugo van Lawick. Raised largely in Tanzania at Gombe Stream National Park, where Jane conducted her research, he grew up immersed in nature. Despite his upbringing amidst wildlife and scientific research, Grub chose a different path from his mother's primatology work and his father's photography career; he is now a boat builder living in Tanzania with his wife Maria and their three children. He attended school in England and later settled in Tanzania. Grub has appeared in some documentaries about his mother but generally keeps a modest, private life away from the spotlight. Jane Goodall credited her research with helping her in raising him, and though her divorce from his father was hard, he adjusted well.
