Jayne Mansfield was an American actress, singer, nightclub entertainer, and Playboy Playmate. She died in an automobile crash in New Orleans on June 29, 1967, at the age of 34. Mansfield was traveling in a 1966 Buick Electra convertible with several other passengers after performing at a supper club in Mississippi. The car crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer, killing Mansfield and two others instantly. The cause of death was brain trauma sustained in the accident. Contrary to popular belief, Mansfield was not beheaded in the accident. The accident led to changes in federal law regarding truck underride guards, which are designed to prevent cars from sliding under the back of a truck in a collision.
