Jimmy Savile was an English media personality who was found to have sexually abused hundreds of people throughout his life. He died on October 29, 2011, at the age of 84 in his penthouse flat overlooking Roundhay Park in Leeds, two days before his 85th birthday. He had been in the hospital with pneumonia. Following his death, Savile was widely praised for his charity and voluntary activities as well as his entertainment work. However, a year after his death, an ITV documentary examined claims of sexual abuse by Savile, which led to further allegations of abuse and a number of public inquiries. The first recorded incidence of Saviles abuse occurred in Manchester in 1955, when he was the manager of a dance hall. There were also investigations into his conduct in NHS hospitals, including Leeds General Infirmary and Stoke Mandeville hospital. Records state that Saviles abuse in these hospitals started in 1965, and it has also been claimed that he had sex with corpses at the Leeds General Infirmary mortuary. While many of his victims reported his crimes while he was alive, he took legal action against some accusers. It was only after his death that his crimes were fully investigated.
