Kenneka Jenkins was a 19-year-old student from Chicago who was found dead on September 9, 2017, inside a latched freezer of the Crowne Plaza Chicago OHare hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, after attending a party there the prior day. Her death was officially ruled an accident by the Cook County medical examiner, who concluded that she died from hypothermia after being exposed to cold. Toxicology tests detected alcohol and topiramate, an epilepsy/migraine medication, in her system, which contributed to her death. Jenkins mother and friends later said they believe otherwise and think that foul play was involved. Her friends stories remained inconsistent as to exactly what had happened after the party, and the circumstances surrounding her death generated controversy, with friends and family members questioning whether foul play had occurred and whether police mishandled the case. Jenkins family sued the hotel for $50 million for negligence, saying they failed to conduct a proper search. A settlement was reached in the wrongful death lawsuit.
