Lawrence Moten, the Syracuse basketball legend and the program's all-time leading scorer, passed away at the age of 53. He was found unresponsive at his home in Washington, D.C., earlier in the week before October 1, 2025. The exact cause of his death has not been publicly disclosed, but authorities confirmed no foul play was suspected. Moten was known as "Poetry in Moten" and held the Big East Conference scoring record for 25 years. He was celebrated for his extraordinary talent and positive presence on and off the court. He played at Syracuse from 1991 to 1995, scoring a record 2,334 points during his college career. After Syracuse, he was drafted in the second round of the 1995 NBA draft and played professionally with the Vancouver Grizzlies and Washington Wizards. He was survived by his wife Noelene and two daughters, Lawrencia and Leilani. His passing has deeply saddened the Syracuse basketball community and former teammates.
