Patrick Mahomes suffered a significant left knee injury in the Chiefs’ most recent game. Multiple reports and a team announcement say it is a torn ACL, and he will miss the rest of the 2025 season.
What happened in the game
Mahomes injured his left knee late in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 16–13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers when his leg buckled as he was brought down while rolling out to throw. He stayed on the ground in clear pain, was evaluated in the medical tent, and then was helped to the locker room and did not return.
Diagnosis and team update
Postgame imaging (MRI) confirmed a torn ACL in his left knee, and the Chiefs have stated that he is out for the remainder of the season. The team and Mahomes are reported to be evaluating surgical options, which is standard for this type of ligament injury.
Impact going forward
With the injury and the loss to the Chargers, Kansas City has been eliminated from playoff contention, ending a long postseason streak for the franchise. Veteran backup Gardner Minshew is expected to start at quarterback for the remaining games while Mahomes begins his recovery process.
