Michael J. Fox is a Canadian-American actor, author, and advocate who was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinsons disease (PD) in 1991 at the age of 29. Parkinson's disease is a progressive and debilitating disorder that causes uncontrollable jerks and twists, shaking, slurred speech, and difficulty with balance and coordination, among other things. Fox has suffered from a number of injuries as a result of his Parkinson's disease, including broken bones in his face and other parts of his body, a benign tumor on his spine, and injuries from losing his balance. Despite these challenges, Fox has continued to be an advocate for finding a cure for Parkinson's disease and has launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support research into the disease. Fox officially retired from acting in 2021 due to his declining health.
