J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the Manhattan Project, was appointed as the chairman of the General Advisory Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) after the war. However, in 1953, during the "Red Scare" over communism, he was stripped of his security clearance and position due to his past associations with the Communist Party and his opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb. This effectively ended his career. He continued to be the director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton until his death. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1965 and died in 1967
