Patrick Mahomes recently suffered a major knee injury to his left leg. It has been confirmed as a torn ACL, and he is out for the rest of the 2025 season.
What happened
Late in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes planted on his left leg while rolling right to throw, and his knee buckled. He went down grabbing his left knee, was examined by trainers on the field, and then left the game with under two minutes remaining.
The diagnosis
Postgame imaging (MRI) showed that Mahomes tore the ACL in his left knee, making it a season-ending injury. The Chiefs have said he and the medical staff are exploring surgical options, which is standard after an ACL tear.
Impact and recovery
The injury ended Mahomes’ season and also coincided with the Chiefs being eliminated from playoff contention. Typical ACL recovery for quarterbacks is on the order of many months, often targeting a return the following season if rehab and surgery go as planned.
