Roy Halladay, the former MLB pitching legend, tragically died in a plane crash on November 7, 2017. He was piloting a small ICON A5 amphibious plane that he had purchased about a month earlier. The plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida, and Halladay was the only occupant. The crash was fatal due to blunt force trauma and drowning. A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report released in 2020 revealed that Halladay had multiple psychoactive substances in his system at the time of the crash, including high levels of amphetamines, morphine, an antidepressant, muscle relaxants, and a sleep aid. The report indicated that he was performing aggressive, low- altitude aerobatic maneuvers close to the water when he lost control of the plane, which resulted in the crash. The NTSB concluded the probable cause was the pilot's impaired judgment due to drug use combined with risky flying behavior. Halladay was 40 years old when he died. Since his passing, he has been honored posthumously in the Baseball Hall of Fame (inducted in 2019) and remembered fondly by the Phillies and Blue Jays organizations. Recently, in October 2025, the Philadelphia Phillies paid tribute to Halladay on the 15th anniversary of his famous NLDS no-hitter from 2010, with his sons participating in a ceremonial first pitch.
