Roy Halladay, a Hall of Fame MLB pitcher known as "Doc," tragically died in a plane crash on November 7, 2017. He crashed his ICON A5 amphibious plane into the Gulf of Mexico near Tampa Bay, Florida. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation concluded the probable cause of the accident was Halladay's poor judgment in executing aggressive, low-altitude maneuvers while impaired by multiple psychoactive substances, including amphetamines, morphine, and antidepressants, which led to a loss of control and ultimately blunt force trauma and drowning causing his death. Halladay was 40 years old at the time.

His legacy continues through memorials such as scholarships awarded in his name and honors by the baseball community. His sons have also been active in commemorating his achievements, including ceremonial first pitches and tributes.
