The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in 2014 with Russia's occupation and annexation of Crimea following Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity and pro- Russian protests in southeastern Ukraine. Russia supported separatist militants in the Donbas region, leading to a war there. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, escalating into the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. The invasion caused massive casualties, displacement of millions of Ukrainians, and major international condemnation with numerous sanctions imposed on Russia. By 2025, fighting continues with Russia occupying about 20% of Ukraine, ongoing attacks from both sides, and continued military operations, including drone strikes deep inside Russian territory. The war remains unresolved with significant human, military, and geopolitical consequences.
