Saturn cars were produced in the United States until the company disbanded in 2010. Saturn LLC was opened as a subsidiary of General Motors in 1985. The company was known for its plastic body panels that resisted dents and its versatile designs, although the company rarely used this feature. In 2009, Penske Automotive planned to purchase Saturn but backed out, after which production of the vehicles officially ended. The brand was officially discontinued on October 31, 2010, ending GMs experiment with its different kind of car company. GM halted production on October 1, 2009, after a deal to have Nissan-Renault supply cars to Saturn collapsed. Saturns demise may be attributed by some to GMs own financial problems, but it also competed against other GM brands, especially Chevrolet, setting itself on a collision course for its eventual closure. Although new Saturn vehicles have not been available in the United States for some years, those who are interested in these models can still seek pre-owned Saturns from years past.
