Sir Ernest Shackleton died of a heart attack on January 5, 1922, while his ship, the Quest, was anchored off South Georgia. He was buried there at his wifes request. Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer who participated in several Antarctic expeditions, including the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–16) and the Shackleton-Rowett Antarctic Expedition in 1921. During the former expedition, his ship, the Endurance, was trapped in ice and drifted for 10 months before being crushed in the pack ice. Shackleton and his men survived by camping on the ice and eventually making their way to Elephant Island and then South Georgia. After returning from his expeditions, Shackletons life was generally restless and unfulfilled. He launched business ventures that failed to prosper, and he died heavily in debt. The wreck of the Endurance was discovered just over a century later. Shackletons cabin on the Quest was rescued after many years in a shipyard and now resides in the Shackleton Museum in Athy.
