Spencer Rattler is still in the NFL, but he recently lost his starting quarterback job with the New Orleans Saints and has been benched in favor of rookie Tyler Shough.
NFL status
Rattler was drafted by the New Orleans Saints and became their starting quarterback in the 2025 season after previously starring at Oklahoma and South Carolina in college. Through about seven and a half games in 2025, he completed a solid percentage of his passes but mixed in turnovers, sacks, and fumbles that hurt the offense’s overall production.
Why he was benched
After a 1–7 start and several rough outings, including a multi‑turnover performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Saints decided to replace Rattler with second‑round rookie Tyler Shough. Reports indicate the team intends to move forward with Shough as the starter while Rattler shifts into a backup role, at least for now.
What this means now
Rattler remains on the Saints’ roster and could get another opportunity if injuries or poor play affect the new starter. For the moment, though, “what happened” is that he lost the QB1 job due to inconsistent play and the team’s poor record, not because he left football entirely.
