Steve Irwin was killed by a short-tail stingray while filming a documentary in the Great Barrier Reef in 2006. The stingrays barb pierced his chest, penetrating his thoracic wall and heart, causing massive trauma. Crew members aboard Irwin's boat administered CPR and rushed him to the nearby Low Island, where medical staff pronounced him dead. There is no information available about what happened to the stingray that killed Steve Irwin. However, after Irwin's death, at least ten stingrays were found dead and mutilated on Australia's shores in what was thought to be revenge attacks by his devastated fans. Michael Hornby, the executive director of Steve's conservation group, Wildlife Warriors, deeply condemned these attacks.
