The Titanic was a British luxury passenger liner that sank on April 14-15, 1912, during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, and sank in less than three hours. The sinking resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The ship did not have enough lifeboats for the approximately 2,220 people on board, and there were just over 700 survivors. The collision damaged the ship and its watertight compartments, and with a limited number of lifeboats, many passengers could not escape the ship.
